Orlando Magic pick J.J. Redick was arrested two weeks ago in Durham, N.C., on charges of drunken driving. He was pulled over without incident after turning around as he approached a license checkpoint near the Duke campus, registering a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent -- over the legal limit of 0.08 in North Carolina.

Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas missed a court hearing Tuesday on a charge of resisting an officer without violence, and a warrant was briefly issued before the arraignment was rescheduled.

Crimes in other pro sports (besides football)
Feb 12--After the NFL Pro Bowl tonight, the NFL Season has officially ended. Updates to this blog may be less frequent until Pre-season starts.

Several friends and colleagues have asked me to establish sites for other sports like MLBCRIMES.COM or NBA crimes dot com (there would certainly be no shortage of material), but I am a football fan first and foremost. Here is an aside of the real crime in sports, and it is not NFL related--the NBA's slighting of Louisiana.

Now that my NBA team, the 'New Orleans' Hornets, are going to play most of next season in Oklahoma City, there is no since in me setting up a basketball crimes site.

NBA Commissioner David Stern is guilty of the worst crime in all of sport, in that he would rather have more profitable sellout crowds in OKC than have the New Orleans Hornets where they belong..in New Orleans to honor their commitment to the State of Louisiana Taxpayers who paid them untold millions to re-locate the team from Charlotte, sign a long term commitment to Louisiana, and upgrade the New Orleans arena to NBA standards--Never mind that it was specifically built to NBA standards at the time of construction to house the Minnesota Timberwolves. Remember, in a lawsuit, the court held that the Timberwolves signed the agreement to move to New Orleans in bad faith, and never had any intention of going to New Orleans. They just wanted to force the hand of the Minnesota legislature to get a new arena in Minnesota. So you had a world class, debt free, purpose built NBA arena sitting vacant for several years hosting local events (notably a minor league hockey team).

And under the deal the Hornets negotiated with Louisiana, the state must give taxpayer dollars as a payout for poor attendance records. Given that last season saw the lowest NBA attendance of any NBA team for the Hornets, the state has forked over millions to the Hornets. So how does the NBA thank the downtrodden Louisiana citizens in their time of need, after they have paid so much taxpayer moolah to the Hornets? They move away, perhaps for good. Now that I live in the suburbs of Washington, DC, maybe I can become a Wizards fan. How about creating NBA crimes dot com just to house that material?

Perhaps I should establish NHL crimes dot com, now that the wife of all time Hockey Great Wayne Gretsky has been implicated in a sports betting scandal. Some news accounts accuse Wayne himself of being privy to his wife's goings on.
